Motorhome MOT – Stanway

Motorhomes need an MOT every year once they’re three years old, and All Trans Autos carry out motorhome MOTs in a bay that takes vehicles up to 5.5 tonnes. That means larger motorhomes that won’t fit into a standard MOT bay can be tested here, without a long drive to find a garage that can take them.

What the MOT checks on a motorhome

The MOT covers the parts of your motorhome that affect road safety and emissions. These include:

  • brakes and the parking brake
  • steering and suspension
  • tyres and wheels
  • lights, indicators, and reflectors
  • seatbelts, including those fitted in the living area
  • wipers, washers, and the windscreen
  • the horn, mirrors, and number plates
  • exhaust emissions

The MOT doesn’t check the habitation side of your motorhome, such as the gas system, leisure electrics, or damp.

Which MOT class applies?

The MOT class for a motorhome depends on its design and weight. If you’re unsure which applies to yours, call us with the vehicle’s details and we’ll confirm before you book.

Getting your motorhome ready

A few simple checks before the test can help you avoid a failure on something easy to fix:

  • make sure every light and indicator works, including the number plate lights
  • check the tyres for cracks, bulges, and tread depth, since sidewall cracking is common on motorhomes that sit for long periods
  • top up the screen wash and check the wiper blades
  • make sure all seatbelts click in and retract properly
  • clear anything loose from the cab that could block the driver’s view

If your motorhome has been laid up over winter, it’s worth taking it for a short drive before the test so the brakes have a chance to free off.

Booking your MOT early

You can have your MOT up to a month, minus a day, before the current certificate expires and still keep the same renewal date. Booking early gives you time to sort out any repairs before the old certificate runs out.

If your motorhome fails

We’ll talk you through the reasons for the failure, share photos of the problem, and give you a quote for the repairs. Nothing is fixed without your go-ahead. Because we carry out repairs in-house, most issues can be dealt with here and the motorhome retested without moving it elsewhere.

You can also book your MOT alongside a service, which saves a second trip and lets us look after the base vehicle in a single visit. A courtesy car can be arranged while your motorhome is with us, although charges may apply.
